Department of History / Welcome Message
It is a great pleasure to introduce the Department of History at Florida State University, among the very best history departments in the southeastern United States, and a department with a lengthy tradition of scholarly excellence and academic achievement. Our faculty, whose expertise ranges broadly from Latin America and the United States to Europe and Asia, has accumulated a remarkable array of honors including fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
The faculty’s research and writing has been published in many distinguished publications, including The New York Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Washington Post, The Wilson Quarterly, Daedalus, The American Historical Review, Annales, Comparative Studies in Society and History, and Past & Present.
A glance at our faculty publications page offers yet more evidence of the range and importance of scholarship produced by the department’s faculty members. With many on-going projects, the page promises continued growth in the coming years.
The department’s many scholarly accomplishments as well as its distinguished teaching record have been attracting large numbers of undergraduate and graduate students for decades. At present, we serve over 500 undergraduate history majors and approximately 130 graduate students.
The department’s doctoral program, which has been granting PhDs since 1962, has graduated dozens of accomplished scholars and teachers, many of them achieving national and international recognition for their work.
Our undergraduate offerings are among the most diverse and topical in the College of Arts and Sciences. We offer courses suited to history majors but also essential for students pursuing other programs of study in the humanities, social sciences, business, science, engineering, and medicine.
