Institutes, Research Centers, and Programs

The History Department is home to several institutes and programs, each of which offers scholars and the public useful information and resources, and provides graduate students important educational and professional opportunities. These and other institutes sponsored by the History Department are important centers of research, information, and scholarship. In addition, these units often provide students with work opportunities to help fund their graduate studies.

The Guadalajara Censuses Project is an important scholarly research database for researchers around the world. It also provides graduate students with the opportunity to learn how to interpret, analyze, and organize over two centuries of census data and other historical resources utilizing databases and statistical applications.  Rodney Anderson, Director.
The Holocaust Institute for Educators provides teachers with comprehensive historical information concerning the Holocaust and supplements the current FSU curriculum to educate young people about the significance of the Holocaust.  History faculty members involved in the Institute include Peter Garretson, Jonathan Grant, Robert Gellately, Nathan Stotlzfus, and Edward Wynot.
The Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution is the premier center for Napoleonic studies in North America.  Rafe Blaufarb, Director.
The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience is one of the largest non-federally funded repositories of World War II archival materials in the United States. It collects paper memorabilia and artifacts from veterans, their families, and Home Front workers and volunteers and offers small exhibits and a reference room for researchers. In June 2001, NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw donated his collection that was gathered while writing his books on "The Greatest Generation."  G. Kurt Piehler, Director
The Middle East Center is an important resource for students who are pursuing studies about the Middle East at Florida State University. The MEC also provides students with the opportunity to interact with students from the Middle East who are part of the FSU community.  Peter Garretson, Director.
The Reichelt Oral History Program offers historical accounts to researchers and interviewing experience to graduate students.  Robin Sellers, Director.
